Keep in mind this is only a theory. With all the hoopla about the movie "Brokeback Mountain," which is essentially a movie about gay cowboys, It has made me wonder..."Why on Earth would they make this film?" Is their some segment of our population that fantasies about what cowboys "really" do while out on the range? Evidently the answer to that is "yes." People must ask themselves how did we come to this? How could we have come from John Wayne and Clint Eastwood killing the bad guys to Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal sodomizing each other? Let me explain one possible theory on how it could have happened.
In today's modern cattle and horse breeding business there is nothing left to chance. This means that no longer are little cows and horses made by the random and therefore, uncontrollable process of mating...Oh no... most of it is done through artificial insemination. This way all the variables and so forth, can be controlled, leading to bigger cows and faster horses etc. Well the Bull or Stallion semen must be collected in some manner... And the equivalent of a Cow/horse "Blow up doll" sometimes just doesn't do the trick for the Bull/Stallion. In these cases, as I am give in to understand, the cowboys must then take things into their own hands... LITERALLY!!! Now sometimes the breeders might call in a veterinary specialist, but they are expensive. So often the cowboys ,which once tamed the wild west, are now pressed into service for manually masturbating Bulls and Stallions. "Oh how the Mighty have fallen."
Now when this behavior first started I'm sure it was seen as strange or weird, but now after 20 or 30 years this behavior might seem common place. This "relaxation" of societal norms and acceptance of behavior that once would have been construed as "homosexual" or "gay" could then lead to curiosity and possibly experimentation. Perhaps it started innocently enough... Just "masturbatin' the bull for extra practice." Perhaps they made a game of it such as, "which cowboy can get the bull/stallion off the quickest," after all competion is in our genes. The details are uniportant... The lasting consequences, however, may change the cinematic world as we know it.
Well once the "ball got rolling" as it were, one can see how a group of men, confronted with these unexplained feelings of guilt and isolation might seek to legitimize their practices. Human beings are, afterall, innately social creatures. Now that we've cultivated and entire generation of "Gay Cowboys" it is only to be expected that they would want to embrace social activities where they can identify with the protagonist of, a movie, for example. In essence seeking to explain their situation by being able to point to another example and say, "see it happened to Jake... How am I supposed to resist." Please remember this is only a theory. I say let our cowboys have their self respect back... Let the animals do what nature intended them to do... Stop the insanity!!!
